The Government of Ghana has renewed its commitment to the fight against illegal mining, commonly referred to as Galamsey, with a bold and strategic operation aimed at eliminating the practice and restoring degraded lands and water bodies.
In response to the growing threat Galamsey poses to the environment, public health, and legal mining operations, the government has recruited and deployed a large number of personnel to assist security agencies. This workforce is now actively supporting the military, police, and environmental task forces in targeted regions, particularly in areas heavily affected by illegal mining.
This renewed campaign is being carried out under the broader framework of national environmental protection and sustainable development. It focuses on law enforcement, community engagement, and the promotion of alternative livelihoods for those previously dependent on illegal mining.
“The destruction of our forests and water bodies by Galamsey cannot continue unchecked,” said a government spokesperson. “We are committed to enforcing the law and preserving our natural heritage for future generations.”
The government is calling on all citizens, especially traditional authorities, local leaders, and the youth, to support this nationwide initiative. Public cooperation is essential in identifying illegal miners and protecting the environment from further harm.
The fight against Galamsey is not only a security and environmental issue—it is a national responsibility.
